Thieves Pose As Delivery Men, Rob Elderly Couple In Berkeley Township Home

BERKELEY TOWNSHIP, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- During the busy holiday season, crooks are preying on people right at their doorsteps.

Armed thieves pretending to be delivery men robbed a couple in their New Jersey home.

As CBS2's Meg Baker reported, residents of the Silver Ridge Westerly Development down the shore in Berkeley Township have been on high alert.

"There were two gentlemen come to the door of our neighbor a couple blocks down said they had a delivery package," Chuck Gozzer said.

That knock on the door on Zeeland Drive was not a delivery. Police said two men forced their way into the elderly couple's home, tied them up, and robbed them at gunpoint.

It happened last Tuesday around 5:30 p.m. Police said the man were wearing hoodies and gloves, and posed as package delivery men.

Gozzer said he was shocked to hear about it happening in his senior community.

"I think everyone right now is being more vigilant, keeping in tough with neighbors," he said.

Don Macolino said he moved to the area for peace.

"It makes me tremble a bit. We're up there in age, start locking all your doors, look out the window before opening the door. Before we could keep it unlocked, everyone knew each other," he said.

Police said the robbers took off in a dark-colored sedan, and that the couple was unharmed.

Police have reminded residents that most legitimate parcel delivery companies are in uniform.
