New Exhibition Tells Story Of Daring World War I Aviator

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) — A new museum exhibition devoted to the exploits of a World War I aviator from Connecticut is going on display in his home city.

"Gilbert Jerome: New Haven's WWI Aviator" opens June 14 at the New Haven Museum. Visitors will learn about the airplane crafted of wood, wire and canvas that Jerome flew over the French countryside.

Also on display will be excerpts from his diary as well as letters, sketches and watercolors he sent home from Europe.

Jerome's dog tags, the altimeter and a wooden strut from his SPAD XIII plane, and the wooden marker from his original gravesite in France are on loan by the Connecticut Yankee Council of Scouts BSA in New Haven.

Jerome was killed when his biplane was shot down on July 11, 1918.
