Omicron Variant Found In Deer On Staten Island

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- New Yorkers weren't the only ones hit by the Omicron surge.

A Penn State University study found the variant also infected white-tailed deer on Staten Island.

Scientists discovered the spike by doing nasal swabs on deer there from Dec. 13 to Jan. 31.

Other variants were previously found in deer in New York State, but researchers said this was the first study to find Omicron in deer or any wild animal population.
