5 Best Eating And Drinking Events This Weekend

Not only is it a three-day weekend, but January is almost over. Yippee! Celebrate by attending a film festival or a wine festival, or by participating in one of our other best picks for eating, drinking, and merrymaking this weekend. By Jessica Allen.

Beginning on January 14, the New York Jewish Film Festival takes over the Walter Reade Theater at Lincoln Center to screen "films that investigate, record, and celebrate the Jewish experience." Jointly sponsored by the Film Society of Lincoln Center and the Jewish Museum, the festival has been going on for 24 years. This year's slate features movies from the US, Argentina, Israel, and elsewhere. Wednesday, January 14, through Thursday, January 29, see schedule for details.

Stay warm by expanding your mind at the annual Philip K. Dick International Film Festival of Science Fiction, Fantastic Film, Science, and the Supernatural. Inspired by Dick's writing, as well as other authors, the movies "push the cinematic form to new levels of creativity and originality, and challenge the viewer's reality with ideas and concepts not normally found in conventional stories." This weekend, the Balkans come to Brooklyn. The Zlatne Uste Golden Festival is the city's largest Balkan music event, featuring more than 60 bands, from old-world traditionalists to folk stylists to modern musicians, on four stages at the majestic Grand Prospect Hall. You'll laugh, you'll dance, you'll definitely get down. There will be arts and crafts vendors and refreshment makers on hand as well. At Pinot Days, you can overcome your winter blues with wine. City Winery welcomes pinot noir lovers and producers to its annual celebration of pinot. The Grand Tasting will feature over 30 pinot noir makers, representing the grape's most important growing regions, from Sonoma to Oregon to New Zealand. It's capped at 1,000 attendees, so you'll get lots of face time with fellow wine lovers. Sunday, January 18, 1 to 4 pm, tickets required.

Monday, January 19 is Martin Luther King Jr. Day this year, but the annual MLK celebration held by WNYC and the Apollo takes place on Sunday. It's called "Hear Our Voices, Count Our Votes: MLK's March Continues." The panel of activists, authors, lawyers, and congressional representatives will discuss the Voting Rights Act of 1965, offering a historical overview with an emphasis on King's teachings and impact. Sunday, January 18, 3 pm, free, RSVP to ensure your spot.
