There’s nothing like a nice cold cocktail to help cool you down in the spring and summer heat. Here are five places that are serving up spiked slushies, floats, and blended drinks that are worth your money. By Carly Petrone.
You probably wouldn’t think to combine beer with ice cream but the folks over at Amused are doing just that. They’re taking Mother’s Milk Stout and mixing it with vanilla ice cream for the perfect Beer Ice Cream Float. It’s rich, dark, and creamy with just a hint of oatmeal and chocolate. Nosh on Pigs in a Pretzel or Black Angus Beef Mini Corn Dogs with Cracker Jacks and you’ll definitely feel transported to your childhood. In fact, you’ll probably want seconds.
You’ve got to try the Spice Trade Mule at The Wayland. This $11 cocktail is made with vodka, lemon and lime, ginger, cinnamon syrup, and Angostura bitters and served over so many little pellets of ice that it could almost be called a slushy. Well, an adult version anyway. It’s the perfect blend of sweet and sour with just the right amount of punch from the cinnamon and bitters. Order up some oysters and enjoy the live music. We have a feeling you’ll be staying a while.
Reunion Surf Bar has a bunch of frozen cocktails to choose from, including their famous Frozen Corona. This delicious slushy is made with fresh lime juice, triple sec, and a corona beer. In the mood for something more fruity? Try the Hawaiian Pog (light rum, passion fruit, orange, and guava), the Coco Loco (their version of a pina colada), or the Mermaid (frozen mojito). They’re also serving up the Dark Blizzard (frozen dark n’ stormy) or the Seggae Punch (guava, sorrel, and rum). No matter what you order, these $12 island creations will put you in vacation mode.
Those looking to cool down with a refreshing margarita should head over to Javelina in Gramercy. Sip on one of five different types of frozen margs including the Prickly Pear, the Sangria Swirl, and the Avocado and Cilantro Margarita. Don’t forget the traditional and specialty margaritas as well as the sweet strawberry flavor. Pair one of these with their Seafood Enchiladas, Queso, or Brisket Tacos and you’re all set.
Otto’s Shrunken Head is where you go for fruity cocktails (tiny little umbrellas included). Choose from fun flavors like German Chocolate Cake, Blue Ice, Coco Bango, and Crème-a-Licious or stick with traditional icy treats like the Pina Colada, Margarita, or Daquiri. Don’t forget to ask about their frozen drink specials, too. This tiki bar is the oasis you’re looking for when you need too cool off.
