Forgotten Families: A CBS2 Investigation Into Broken PromisesIn 2019, CBS2 uncovered the “Forgotten Families,” pressured by NYC to relocate from homeless shelters into unlivable NJ homes. For more than a year, we have investigated the “Special One Time Assistance Program," also known as "SOTA." NYC paid landlords outside of the five boroughs one year’s rent upfront (around $20,000). Our investigation found many landlords were never vetted and disappeared. Since the families no longer resided in NYC, they were not eligible for NYC support. New Jersey cities were not made aware of the relocations and then struggled to provide comparable housing resources and legal advocacy. Our investigation prompted municipalities to change local laws, and eventually lead Newark, NJ and other governments to file a landmark federal lawsuit against NYC.
