Wheelchair Stolen In Front Of Upper East Side Church

NEW YORK (CBS 2) -- Like she had done on most days, 86-year-old Ellie Krach rode her scooter to a church on theUpper East Side and parked it.

When she came outside an hour later, however, it was gone.

"I thought did I use my scooter? Did I really have it there today," Krach told CBS 2's Sean Hennessey.

Krach quickly realized that her brand new Victory 9 had been swiped.

"I was shocked and amazed that people would do that to someone who needs a scooter," Krach said.

Both Krach and her minister were stunned and saddened by fact that the theft took place in front of a place of worship -- the Jan Hus Presbyterian Church on East 74th Street.

"It's a sad combination isn't it," Krach asked.

"I was pretty amazed. I guess I would put it under that category heading of just when you think you've seen it all," Rev. Ray Bagnuolo said.

Rueben Sabillon was working across the street and said he witnessed what happened.

"Somebody came with a minivan and they took the scooter. They put the scooter in the van and they're gone," Sabillon said.

Sabillon passed the information along, but when Krach went to the police to report the kind of van it was and the license plate number, she got some discouraging news.

"They said they weren't too hopeful -- that there was a gang going around taking motorcycles and these scooters and that they were stolen vans and stolen license plates," Krach said.

Krach is currently using a borrowed scooter and said she plans on securing it with a chain lock.
