Port Authority Approves Toll, PATH Train Fare Hikes; Commuters: ‘It’s Highway Robbery’

PA: Money Raised To Complete Projects Will Lead To Creation Of 131,000 Jobs

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — The Port Authority passed hefty toll and fare hikes on Friday.

But instead of raising them all at once, commuters will be hit with five yearly increments, reports CBS 2’s Marcia Kramer.

At the Lincoln Tunnel commuters just weren’t feeling the love for the hikes.

“It’s just outrageous because it seems like everything goes up except our pay,” said Lou Leone of Denville, N.J.

“I feel it’s highway robbery,” another driver said.

“I think it’s crazy. I think it’s ridiculous,” added another.

The Port Authority said it was a difficult decision, weighing the needs of families struggling to make ends meet with the need to complete economic projects that will mean 131,000 jobs in the region. It came down on the side of jobs.

“We knew an increase in revenue for tolls and fares had to happen,” Port Authority Chairman David Samson said.

Under the plan:

* The current E-ZPass rate will jump $1.50 next month, from $8 to $9.50 and eventually to $12.50

* If you pay cash, count on paying a $2 surcharge

* PATH train rates will rise from $1.75 to $2 now and eventually to $2.75

“Right now with the economy so bad we’re struggling with the money. It’s so bad for us,” said Morris Martinez of Haldon, N.J.

If you’re worried about budgeting your money, the new hikes will mean:

* You’ll pay an additional $750 a year to use the Hudson River crossings during peak hours

* $132 a year more if you buy a monthly PATH ticket

* $125 a year more if you pay by the day on PATH and work a five-day week.

In exchange for shelling out more dough, the Port Authority plans to finish rebuilding ground zero, replace the suspender cables on the 80-year-old George Washington Bridge, fix the helix to the Lincoln Tunnel built in 1937, raise the roadway on the Bayonne Bridge so bigger ships can come here, and rebuild the Goethals Bridge.

“None of these projects is small, nor are they inexpensive, but we are called to continue our economic leadership and these billions in project investments translate to hundreds of thousands of jobs,” Samson said.

The Port Authority extended the effective date until Sept. 18 so people going away for end-of-the-summer vacations will get a break.

The highest tolls are paid during the peak hours of 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays. On the weekends, peak hours are from noon to 8 p.m. and off-peak tolls are generally $2 less.

If the rich doesn’t pay high taxes, who else would pay ? Of course the middle class and the poor has to pay the price. Whatever the deficit and infrastructure plans, the hikes are just too crazy for average commuter.

Has anyone ever noticed… it’s free to get into Jersey but you always have to pay to get out!!!

This is outrageous, but necessary. More outrageous, and no news story has talked about it, is why no one pays toll to get into the city from the BMW or Queensboro bridges? This increase could have been avoided if those residents had been made to pay even $2 in year 1, rising to $5 in four years’ time.

  7. JustSaying says:

Everyone will pi$$ and moan about the increases but when it’s all said and done, you’ll ante up! You have no choice. But hey, just think of it as an ‘admission fee’ for the privilege of living and/or working in the ‘Big Apple’. Too bad you’re finding out the apple is rotten to the core!

  8. Anonymous says:

Job creation B*******! Thats a lame excuse for the PA to F****** raise tolls! The PA are worried about their own raises and their own pockets, they have non ones best interests in mind except their own gee thanks governors Cuomo and Christie

  9. MCK says:

Add this to the cost of going to see the New Jersey Jets and New Jersey Giants play to an already astronomical cost! It’s too expensive to leave the house anymore!

  10. Leon J. Mormann says:

It would be cheaper to reside in another state. I would never live in NYC for anything. We have several federal prisons in NYC but I rather reside in Atlanta because of the extra expense.

  11. Bob Fowler says:

I’m just wondering if anyone who read this article thought it all the way through? Pay close attention as to what they plan to do with the money. For the privileged of paying higher tolls, you will also get to spend more time on your journey, as they are planning major renovations and repairs to the GWB and Lincoln Tunnel helix.

Start your carping now friends, because when they start the work, many people will start looking for other jobs, other cities to move to, and other means of travel. Don’t be the last to jump on this bandwagon. All of this you are to endure, to prove to the radical Islamists that we will spend another couple of $ billion on restoring Ground Zero. Well, that and the obligatory graft.

F*ck that homer simpson like looking clown cuomo and that fat cow Christie. These hikes were the last straw, I’m moving out of the tri state area. People have options , they don’t need to put up with being gouged by homer simpson cuomo and fat albert christie!

I live in Seattle. We’re about to undertake a very ambitious project: The longest deep-bore tunnel in the world. It’s going to be tolled to pay for it. Know what the rate will be? 3 dollars.

Yet you guys aren’t reaching for your torches and pitchforks about paying 12 bucks to cross something that doesn’t cost anywhere NEAR as much? C’mon, I thought New Yorkers were tough!

  16. tickedoffinnj says:

The irony is that it will overwhelmingly affect people living in northern NJ who have to commute into NYC to work. No one works in NJ and lives in NYC. That is where it is supposed to be cheaper to live for people living in NYC. Once it goes up $4 a day, that will in essence be an additional ~$1000 a year flat tax. These aren’t wall street fat cats paying these increases. These are the people who can’t afford to live in NYC. Talk about regressive taxes.

Governor Christie should be ashamed of himself. He sold out his residents. On the other end, this was an easy choice Cuomo. His consituents aren’t being hit with as big of a burden.

    1. Garth says:

No one told you to work in New York, nor held a gun to your head and said you must live in Jersey and work in the city. That was your choice and your choice alone. There are plenty fo jobs in new Jersey that are decent paying, but since you want to live in Shorthills, adn Your wifes friend Mitzi drives a Beemer, your wife has to have one too.. Do you complain that loudly when you have to fill up your SUV, or the Beemer ?? I think not, since you probably enjoy bein seen in it, and letting the nieghbors know what you have……

    this is a travesty.
Both governors should be ashamed of being played by the PA and the unions!
The way the PA stacked the so called public hearings with union members decked out in brigjt orange shirts is an absolute joke. The way the governors both knuckled under to the PA begs the question “whoisnegotiating for the tax and tollpayers?”. It is obvious the governors are not, they just go the way of the biggest vote block

  21. Tom Owens says:

I am so disappointed at both govenors. WHERE IS THE ACCOUNTABILITY FOR THE PORT ATHORITY??? Why didnt the govenors demand an audit before any price increases went thru? Gov. Christie once said, “People need to learn how to live with in their means”. Govenor, doesn’t this go for the PA too?? I can not believe Christie let this go thru with out a fight. It’s ashame too because I WAS going to vote for him again but now, Hell No!!!! I’M TIRED OF POLITICS AS USUAL

    1. BC says:

I was a big supporter of Christie until now. I’m sorely disappointed that he didn’t take a harder stance against the Port Authority. Ultimately, we are getting a $4 toll increase – just get it in increments to supposedly ease the pain.

This wasn’t a difficult decision for PA as they say. A difficult decision would be personnel changes and cuts in benefits and overtime for them. It’s much easier to spread the hurt among the millions of commuters, rather than your own rank and file.

  22. Joseph says:

What do you expert from them. They do not have to pay a penny.
They have free Pass even their family. Let them pay their own fare
You’ll see if they vote yes all the time.

  23. Norman says:

First, how bout cutting the salaries of those on top. Just like the rest of us are trying to make ends meet with less. Why not start at the top to save money to use for what needs to be done. I believe there should be an outside watchdog to make sure that this money is not to be use for raises but only for so call improvements. All I hear is people having their salaries being cut, but, I don’t hear about those on top making any reductions in their pay. Yet, more is expected from those trying to make ends meet,

  24. M McMann says:

This is incredible now they want cash payers to pay $11.50 to force yo to get EZ-Pass i guess a little white box for tracking your movements is beter for the goverment than cash

    1. Bob Fowler says:

Actually, by removing cash from circulation, they can create one world currency. They will be able to control where you go, what you spend your ‘money’ on, Restricting where and when you can buy will be easy. Controlling your income will be no problem. Tax fraud will be a thing of the past, because they will deduct it directly from your account whenever they want to.

I read about how this was going to happen in a book…I can’t remember where…oh yeah, in The Bible. Some silly man (John), living in the desert, surviving on locusts and honey, who believed in a flying carpenter zombie, had a vision 2000 years ago, wrote it down, and somehow it comes to pass. Yeah, that book was such a crock.

A couple of weeks ago was the story about the hand scan for medical treatment, and now this? That silly book just keeps being right. How did it ever last 2000 years, when the intellects knew that it was just a fairy tale?

The cool part is that, regardless of your intellect, political affiliation, race…all you must do is accept the Gift that is offered. You can deny the existence of the Gift if you choose to, but that in no way makes it not real. You do not have to accept it, as it is a Gift. Think of the Gift as a debit card, worth $1,000,000 that I just handed to you. Until you do something with it, it is just a piece of plastic in your hand. Much like the Gift, you do not have to use the card, but if you choose not to, you will lose out on its value…nobody else but you will lose. It is your choice.

  25. sharon wolff says:

I agree 100% with D. The original huge increase was a “ploy” to get what they really wanted. Gov Christie doesn’t have to worry about money, nor does his father of anyone in his family. Therefore, Christie will ask for increases without thinking of the poor middle and low class worker who is already having trouble making ends meet. Gov Cuomo, I am surprised you agreed with the $1.50 increase. Too we can’t “strike or boycott” the bridges and tunnels. So given this increase, does that mean all the BIG SHOTS will get raises/bonuses and the ‘overtime will flow again” YOU BETCHA

  26. D says:

Hysterical. All they wanted was the $1.50..so they say its gonna be $4, people freak out…then the Governors swoop in, flex a little muscle and save the day and it doesn’t seem that bad. Port Authority continue to be the bad guy, Governors look “good,” and the people still get raped.

    And the beat goes on…

  27. Need To Know Basis says:

Good Reason why I don’t visit NYC. I use to work there for many years and quite honestly “I don’t miss NY”. Here’s a new slogan for NYC. “I have NY” instead of “I love NY”… NJ commuters will more than likely need to learn how to swim across the Hudson to get to work… Or better yet look for another job. Am so glad that I made the change many years ago, By By NY…
As a matter of fact I was a contractor for the Port Authority bunch of brainless baffoons. Main reason why I walked off the job and never looked back…

  28. Bernie Sanders says:

time to move leave this ugly city !

    1. Rojo says:

people ARE moving!! Who can afford to live here anymore??

  29. Al Fossa says:

The Port Authority should NOT raise tolls, plain and simple! They should be investigated and ultimately abolished. $8 is akin to grand theft as it is. While some nominal charge is undoubtedly necessary they have abused their privilage to charge a fee because of mismanagement. The Port Authority is a bad joke and a cash cow for mismanaged state budgets.
    Al Fossa

  30. NYC Blows says:

Can’t believe New Yorkers will pay this much….just don’t get it. All for what? The right to travel within the city? That’s crazy. These bridges do not require that kind of toll hike to maintain those bridges…it’s a lie. It’s the city’s way of just getting more revenue…period. You can go to any other city in the union and their tolls don’t even come close. Everything else will follow suit shortly…good luck suckers!
