Infant Among 4 Dead In Apparent Bayonne Triple Murder-Suicide

BAYONNE, N.J.  (CBSNewYork) -- There was carnage on a quiet street in Bayonne on Monday night.

Three adults -- including the shooter -- and an infant were shot dead inside the house at 96 Avenue A. Police said the shooter opened fire on a family before taking his own life.

Police have not yet confirmed the relationship between the victims or even their names. However, neighbors said the gunman was targeting his estranged wife, or girlfriend, fatally shooting her, another adult and a baby.

"The shooter seemed to be standing in the doorway, the door was open and he seemed agitated and he kind of kicked the door shut and they started hearing 'pop, pop, pop' like gunshots," neighbor Robin Kirk said.

There was shock and sadness on the block, where neighbors said they've never witnessed anything like it -- the gunfire, three murders and a suicide -- all at one house.

"Why would you kill your children? Your wife's having an affair, divorce her," neighbor Stacey Maggio told CBS 2's Derricke Dennis. "And you know it's good that he turned the gun on himself. He shouldn't be alive, he should be dead."

Neighbors said they were a quiet family and kept to themselves. They had moved in this summer, but really kept to themselves, neighbors said.

Another victim -- a woman -- ran down the street screaming and bleeding.  She was rushed to the hospital.  Another child also escaped the home uninjured when the shooting occurred.

The next-door neighbor dialed 911 and help arrived in minutes, but for those shot in the house, there was nothing anyone could do.
