B&C Show Blog & Audio: St. Patty's Day Party

By Max Herman

It was the St. Patrick's Day edition of the Boomer & Carton radio program this morning, live from Connolly's Pub in Manhattan. The crowd was lively and Craig's outfit was very green. Yes, the "second round" of the NCAA Tournament begins today, and Craig still isn't giving St. John's much of a chance. But speaking of green, the Jets have embarrassed themselves again by implementing layoffs and pay cuts of up to 25% for their employees -- and even some of their coaching staff. But at least we can take solace in the fact that the Giants did something about their PSL email blunder, announcing they will not be taking money from their fans for a season that is not yet guaranteed to happen. But most of all, the guys want to make sure the Jets are exposed for their exploitation of the everyday working man.

Jerry Rello comes in to give us his first update of the morning. We hear audio from St. John's head coach Steve Lavin, who marvels at the natural beauty in the state of Oregon. The Johnnies play Gonzaga there in their first tournament game tonight. We also get the latest from Mets and Yanks Spring Training. Ivan Nova didn't give up a hit in his start yesterday, and Craig makes the case that Joe Girardi should have let him try to go for the no-no. We also hear about a scary story involving Braves' coach Luis Salazar and even get a little bit of golf news.

Craig puts out a plea for die-hard Yankees fans to call in now that Opening Day against the Tigers is exactly two weeks away. First, the guys have an audio clip that reveals the medical reason why Joba Chamberlain is experiencing muscle pain in his side. They again touch on Cliff Lee's "the Yankees are getting old" comments briefly. Then the Yankees fan callers let us know how they feel about the state of the team, especially the starting rotation.

The chairman of CBS Sports, Sean McManus calls in to give us an idea of what to expect with the new broadcasting format this year with NCAA Tournament games being nationally televised on a host of different networks. Boomer and Craig ask McManus about how the viewers will be able to flip the channel over to close games that are in the final minutes, as well as how CBS will judge its ratings for the tournament broadcasts. Craig also attempts to find out how the NFL's labor situation could potentially affect the network's revenue in the event that there is no football next season.

After talking briefly about it at the top of the show, Boomer and Craig dive further into the Jets debacle. The labor situation in the NFL is affecting many people: players, owners and fans alike. But despite the fact that the Jets ownership is stupid wealthy, they are still trying to milk every cent they can out of their fans' pockets. Recently we heard the news that they are implementing 25% pay cuts to many of their lower level employees. Boomer and Craig feel the need to stick up for the working class and stick it to the man… with the man in this case being Woody Johnson.

Much of the final hour of the show was dedicated to the St. John's Red Storm. The sixth-seeded Johnnies kick off their NCAA Tournament play in the great state of Oregon tonight vs. 11-seed Gonzaga. Craig isn't feeling the passion from the St. John's fan base, so he wants to hear from excited Red Storm supporters. Regardless of what happens tonight, it seems Craigie isn't giving Steve Lavin's crew a chance to advance much further than one round anyway. Boomer, on the other hand, isn't so quick to play the role of naysayer, as he starts off with three reasons why Dwight Hardy and company could make a run.

Then Boomer and Craig spend a few minutes with Colum Egan, the master distiller for Bushmills whiskey and friend of the show. Colum informs the guys that their Boomer & Carton brand of Bushmill's is coming along great, and could be completely aged and ready within a few years. Then we get the Moment of the Day from Jerry, in which we find out that Craig can impersonate Joe D in Staten Island pretty well. This is despite the fact that Joe doesn't seem to have the highest opinion of Mr. Carton.

We closed out the show today with a live performance from the often-imitated, never-duplicated Al Dukes. With Craig on the drums, Al and the band give the rowdy crowd at Connolly's a hard-rocking performance of the Mike Pelfrey-inspired song "I Wanna Lick My Hand." It is based on the Beatles' song "I Wanna Hold Your Hand."
