Straphangers Campaign Holds Photo Contest To Show Off Best And Worst Of NYC Subways, Buses

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Attention shutterbugs!

The Straphangers Campaign is joining Transportation Alternatives in launching a subway and bus photo contest to highlight the best and worst of the city's transit system.

Contestants can submit up to three photographs in each of the two categories.

New Yorkers will get the opportunity to show what mass transit looks like to them - whether it's a "Good Transit Scene" or a "Bad Transit Scene."

"For many New Yorkers the subways hold a lot of appeal - even romance -- like a sunset from an elevated line," Gene Russianoff, head of the Straphangers Campaign, told 1010 WINS. "For other people it spells overflowing garbage pails and peeling paint. We wanted to give both sets of New Yorkers a chance to express their view point."

The contest was spurred on by concerns over what kind of an impact recent cuts in services due to the financial downturn and massive MTA budget deficit have had on the quality of service on the system.

"Our groups are concerned that years of budget cuts are taking their toll on the system," Russianoff said.

Photo entries must be submitted online to straphangers.org by June 10.

Winners will get a free 30-day unlimited-ride Metro Cards.
