2 Men Killed In Separate Newark Shootings

NEWARK, NJ (AP) -- Two separate shootings Saturday killed two men and injured three people in Newark.

The body of a 24-year-old man was discovered around 2 a.m. in Newark's North Ward after reports of a shooting on Highland Avenue, Detective Josephine Santaniello said. The man was taken to Clara Maass Medical Center in Belleville with a gunshot wound to the chest and was pronounced dead a short time later.

Police are investigating and haven't released the man's name. No arrests have been made.

Later in the day in the city's South Ward, shots rang out near an apartment complex on Irvine Turner Boulevard. Authorities told The Star-Ledger of Newark that a 36-year-old Union County man was shot in the thigh at around 7 p.m. and later died at University Hospital.

Two other men and one woman were shot in the leg and were hospitalized, Santaniello said. The newspaper reports that authorities cordoned off several blocks in the area while investigating.
