62 Arrested In Seaside Heights After Fights Break Out Following Fireworks Display

SEASIDE HEIGHTS, NJ (AP / CBSNewYork) - Plenty of fights in Seaside Heights, N.J., have aired on MTV's "Jersey Shore," but none have resulted in quite as many arrests as this past holiday weekend.

Police made 62 arrests at the town's boardwalk after fights broke out following a July 4 fireworks display.

Police say some of the thousands of spectators lingered after the fireworks show and a series of fights broke out which continued until police ordered the boardwalk closed at 1 a.m. Tuesday.

Seaside Heights Detective Steve Korman told the Asbury Park Press that 39 people were arrested on disorderly persons offenses. Others were charged with assault, drug possession and interfering with law enforcement.

"I think the police handled it real well. You know, they cleared the boardwalk to avoid any other incidents, and they also are sending that message to the people that Seaside Heights is not going to tolerate this behavior anymore," one resident told WCBS 880 reporter Sean Adams.

Police say they're not sure what caused the fights, though some locals say out-of-town troublemakers were roaming around in packs, looking for fights.

The MTV reality series is shooting another season in Seaside Heights, but police say they weren't involved.
