NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — Environmentalists opposed to hydrofracking, a controversial process to extract natural gas from under ground, were protesting outside Governor Andrew Cuomo’s office this week.

LISTEN: WCBS 880’s Peter Haskell reports

About two dozen protesters were outside Cuomo’s office calling on him to ban hydrofracking. The process uses water and chemicals to extract natural gas from the earth.

“The risk of contamination, pollution of our ground water, our drinking water,” said Eric Wiltman is with Food and Water Watch. “The pollution to the air caused by fracking.”

Jessica Haller calls this an uncontrolled experiment.

“We’re going to keep pumping things that we don’t know the total effects of them and all the systems on the planet,” said Haller.

The state is in the process of possibly allowing some fracking on private property. The governor is waiting to hear from an advisory panel.

Hydrofracking MUST be stopped at all costs. If we don’t have pure water we all die. Dumba$$es!

except the people who drink the water

  3. Anthony Pepe says:

educate yourself on the dangers of fracking before making flippant comments. these people are doing you all a favor. they have the balls to stand up for what’s right.

  5. Cylon says:

What the frak? Hydrofracking sounds like something out of Battlestar Gallactica.

  6. Ann T. says:

Why are those against hydrofracking always labeled environmentalists only? This is a human health issue. Wake up people and reporters.

  7. frack off says:

Hey, smart guy, haven’t you heard about the property owners in PA whose drinking water has become flammable as a result of the gases that have seeped into their wells due to hydrofracking? Not to mention those whose homes have become worthless because no one wants to buy them? If you were in the market to buy a house in the country, would you buy a plot of land anywhere near a hydrofracking site? I strongly doubt it. By the way, I’m not a vegetarian, but your argument that they are causing anywhere near the environmental harm that hydrofracking causes is extremely weak.

  8. smart guy says:

wow! 2 dozens? wowwwwwwwwwwww!!!!!!!! interestingly, most of these environmentalists are also vegans… we should protest them from harming the earth due to their massive consumption of plants… yep! plants! we need plants to consume co2 and produce o2 for humans. yet those idiots are taking precious natural o2 away from us 🙁 we should file a class action injunction against vegan and vege diet.

  9. Ahwatukee T says:

I wonder whether any of the protesters used fossil fuels to get to the protest. Idiots.

  10. Areuay says:

Ask an environmentalist and anything a human does will destroy us all. Maybe I should just become a bumb, quit my job and go on food stamps and welfare and save the environment.
