Drugs Suspected In Crash That Killed Pedestrian On LI

NEW YORK(CBSNewYork) -- Police in Suffolk County arrested a Medford woman following a crash that killed a pedestrian on Horseblock Road in Medford.

Police say that Maria Galeas and her mother also named Maria were standing behind a parked car  on the eastbound shoulder of the road when they were hit by a 2009 Nissan Altima driven by Elizabeth Peacock. The incident occurred around 5:30 Saturday evening.

All three women were taken to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital by emergency responders. The younger of the Galeas women was pronounced dead at the hospital, her mother and Peacock were admitted with non-life threatening injuries.

Police say that Peacock's 5-year-old daughter, was restrained in a car seat in the Accord at the time of the crash and was uninjured in the crash.

Peacock was charged with Driving While Ability Impaired by Drugs. She will be arraigned at a later date.

Both vehicles were impounded for a safety check. The investigation is continuing. Detectives are asking anyone with information about this incident to contact the Sixth Squad at 631-854-8652 or call anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS. All calls will remain confidential.
