Second Suspect Apprehended In Robbery Of Man, 78, In The Bronx

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A second suspect has been charged in the robbery of a 78-year-old man for his chain and pendant in the Bronx last week.

Datwan Elliot, 23, of the Bronx, was charged with robbery, assault and grand larceny in the assault on Friday, May 12 in front of 900 E. Tremont Ave. in the West Farms section of the Bronx.

Another suspect, Charles Hackett, 23, of the Bronx – already has been charged with robbery, resisting arrest, and criminal possession of marijuana.

The man had just bought flowers to place next to his deceased mother's photo for Mother's Day when two suspects came up from behind and tried to snatch his chain.

The victim tried to fight the suspects off, but the suspects overpowered him and ran off with the chain and pendant, police said.

Police have released a surveillance video showing the robbery in progress. Two people pushing strollers first appear in the frame, quickly backing up as the attackers grab the man.

The man appears to swing the flowers he was carrying wrapped in paper defensively, but ends up on the ground as the suspects steal the pendant and chain.

Officers from the Narcotics Division were on the scene for an unrelated operation, and watched the robbery happen. They chased the suspects and captured one of them – allegedly Hackett – but the other fled, police said.
