David Wright Takes Lead From Giants' Sandoval In All-Star Voting
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The push to start David Wright in the All-Star Game is paying off.
The Mets third baseman has vaulted past San Francisco's Pablo Sandoval and now leads at his position by nearly 129,000 votes. MLB released the latest balloting totals on Sunday night: 2,917,819 for Wright; 2,788,988 for Sandoval.
Sandoval beat out Wright last year behind heavy promotion by the Giants. New York is looking to beat San Francisco at its own game in 2013, with baseball's top stars headed to Citi Field in Flushing.
WFAN radio's "Boomer & Carton" show has been campaigning hard for Wright to get the start at his home ballpark. First the program managed to procure the D-Wright bus from Gray Line tours on June 30. Then there was the "All-Star Sweatshop," which with help from The 7 Line stuffed the ballot box with tens of thousands of votes on Friday.
"You can't stop the momentum," WFAN co-host Boomer Esiason said Monday.
In-stadium paper balloting ends on June 28, though fans can vote online through July 4.
MLB will announce the 2013 All-Star starters on July 6. The game will be played at Citi Field on July 16.
Wright, a six-time All-Star, has won the National League fan vote four times.
