Jets' Goodson Indicted For Firearm, Illegal Ammo Possession

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Mike Goodson's season just went from bad to worse.

Already out for the season due to a knee injury, the Jets' running back was indicted Thursday following an investigation by the Morris County Prosecutor's Office that revealed that he, along with another man, allegedly possessed firearms and illegal ammunition.

Goodson, 26, was arrested back on May 17 after New Jersey State Police responded to a vehicle that was stopped in the center lane of Interstate 80 West in Denville. Garant Evans, 32, of Roselle, N.J., was behind the wheel and Goodson was in the front passenger's seat, Prosecutor Frederic M. Knapp said.

The ensuing investigation recovered a loaded Taurus .45 caliber handgun from the glove box. One of the rounds of ammunition in the handgun was a hollow point bullet, the prosecutor said.

Evans was also indicted for being in possession of a firearm in violation of a state statute prohibiting certain individuals convicted of crimes from possessing a firearm, the prosecutor said.

The official charges against Goodson are second degree unlawful possession of a weapon and fourth degree prohibited weapons and devices.

Goodson signed a three-year, $6.9 million contract with the Jets back on March 15. He was expected to help a running game badly in need of a boost. However, a sabbatical following his arrest, compounded by a league suspension for violating its substance abuse policy, kept Goodson away from the Jets until the fifth game of the season at Atlanta on Oct. 7. He finished with three carries for 32 yards and one reception in that game.

He had four carries for 29 yards and a reception before tearing his ACL and MCL against visiting Pittsburgh on Oct. 13.

The Jets (5-4) are off this week and will return to action on Nov. 16 at Buffalo.
