NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) — A water main break near the Holland Tunnel in Lower Manhattan Friday morning caused traffic headaches even for evening commuters.

CHECK: Traffic

Delays of up to an hour were reported at the Holland Tunnel during the evening rush, CBS 2’s Alice Gainer reported.

The traffic spilled over into the Lincoln Tunnel as well, causing delays of up to 45 minutes, CBS 2’s Joe Biermann reported.

By the 8 p.m. hour Friday, traffic was finally returning to normal with residual delays.

The 12-inch main broke around 6 a.m. Friday at the intersection of Varick Street and Spring Street.

“When we arrived, it was just water flowing pretty heavily out of the break in the street,” said FDNY Battalion Chief John Dunne.

Crews had the water completely shut off in about an hour. Most of the water was trapped in storm drains.

“We were lucky that the position of the break, most of the water was flowing downhill on the street,” Dunne said.

Some of the water flooded the basements of two buildings, including the Trump SoHo building, WCBS 880’s Jim Smith reported.

Department of Environmental Protection spokesman Eric Landau said crews were brought in and immediately started working on repairs.

“We’ve got one block that is affected right now and those people are without water,” he told 1010 WINS’ Glenn Schuck. “It’s mostly commercial as opposed to residential.”

The main may not be repaired until midnight, CBS 2’s Alice Gainer reported.

“Our building has informed us that it may not be done by tomorrow so we’ll see,” an employee at the Ducati dealership told WCBS 880’s Marla Diamond.
