Defense Lawyer: Might Be Difficult For Connecticut Man Accused Of Killing His Parents To Receive Fair Trial

WESTON, Conn. (CBSNewYork) -- The Connecticut man charged with murdering his parents is preparing for what is expected to be a long and difficult trial.

Kyle Navin is being held in federal prison on $2.5 million bond. The remains of his parents, Jeanette and Jeffrey Navin, were found months after the couple went missing. An autopsy found they were shot to death.

Renowned defense attorney Gene Riccio is representing Navin in the highest-profile case in Connecticut in years.

"The real challenging aspect of this situation, I think, is the emotional component of the Navin case, and that is you have a young man accused of killing his mother and father," Riccio told WCBS 880 Connecticut Bureau Chief Fran Schneidau.

The emotionally charged situation could make it difficult for Navin, 27, to receive a fair trial, Riccio added.

Navin's arrest warrant catalogs a growing anger he felt toward alleged mistreatment by his parents, which prosecutors say peaked when Navin, an alleged heroin addict, learned they planned to cut him out of their wills.

Navin is charged with two counts of murder and murder with special circumstances as well as a weapons offense.

His girlfriend, 31-year-old Jennifer Valiante, was also arrested and charged with conspiracy to commit murder and hindering prosecution.
