City Calls For Additional Workers To Help Clean Up After Blizzard

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- New York City officials late Sunday were summoning additional emergency workers to help clean up after the snowstorm.

Mayor Bill de Blasio said the city will pay $13.50 for the first 40 hours of work in a week, then $20.25.
Especially needed were workers to remove snow and ice from bus stops, crosswalks, fire hydrants and steps, WCBS 880's Stephanie Colombini reported.

"We've now scene the storm is literally the second worse in our history this close from being the first worst biggest we've ever had," Mayor de Blasio said Sunday.

Those interested must be at least 18 years old, eligible to work in the United States, and capable of performing heavy physical labor.

They must register at sanitation garages around the city each day from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., with two small photos, plus two forms of ID.

Officials said the 26.8 inches of snow that fell in Central Park on Saturday was the second-most recorded since 1869.
