Yankees In Unfamiliar Place As They Sit In AL East Basement

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- It's been a rough start to the season for the New York Yankees to put it bluntly.

The Yankees are currently in the American League East basement with an 8-15 record, six games behind the first-place Boston Red Sox, CBS2's Steve Overmyer reported.

It's a sight fans are not familiar with.

"You know why? Because we suck. We got swept by the Red Sox," one fan said.

It's been more than 20 years since the Yankees were this bad. The team is not scoring, and giving up too many runs, as they have a -31 run differential.

"We need it to stop and start playing the baseball we're capable of and get it in the win column," Yankees general manager Brian Cashman told WFAN.

Cashman told Mike Francesa that he will be flying to Baltimore to speak with the team to stress the importance of turning this around.

"It's causing a lot of sleepless nights. We have to figure out what is a slump and what is reality," Cashman said.

It's an unfamiliar place for the Yankees as the organization has been the model of success for the past two decades. In that span, they've gone to the playoffs 17 times and won five World Series.

But this year the high-priced offense has been struggling mightily. Chase Headley is batting .156 with no home runs and only 2 runs batted in. Alex Rodriguez is hitting .203, but has been hitting the ball harder lately. Mark Teixeira is hitting .225. Jacoby Ellsbury is hitting .247 with a .295 on-base percentage.

Fans have been taking to social media to vent about the Yankees' play.

"That's the one thing this city does bring out in people, it's your best or your worst," Cashman said. "The environment itself brings out the tough stuff."

Cashman said they don't plan on promoting anyone from the minors, and it's too early to make trades, so the current roster will need to get through this themselves.

Luis Severino takes the mound Tuesday night as the Yanks take on the Baltimore Orioles to begin a three-game series.
