New York City Sees Multiple Fatal Hit-And-Runs Over Weekend

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork)-- The streets of the city were unforgiving this weekend. Pedestrians and cyclists alike were struck and killed in several cased by hit-and-run drivers.

Police responded to a scene just before 1:30 Sunday morning at White Plains Road and Gun Hill Road responding to a 62-year-old woman who was hit and killed by a dark SUV, CBS2's Steve Langford reported.

Family members mourned the loss hours after Sharon Smith was left to die on the street.

"Why would you hit and leave her there?" a relative said.

In all, the death toll across the city this weekend was two pedestrians killed by vehicles and and two cyclists.

A 26-year-old man was killed on his bike early Saturday in the Bronx when an SUV struck Giovanni Nin on East Tremont Avenue and kept going. Police released surveillance video of a silver BMW X5.

"Just look at me I won't be the same woman I was yesterday morning," the victim's mother, Raisa Jiminez, said.

On Sixth Avenue at West 30th Street in Manhattan Saturday just after 5 p.m., 52-year-old Po Ng was crossing the street when she was hit by an SUV. The driver remaining at the scene and is facing no charges at the time.

"She died? Very sad, I feel very bad," witness Ahmed Masud said.

A couple of hours later on West Street at Chambers in Lower Manhattan, a woman on a bicycle was hit and killed by a white pick-up truck. Police said the driver, 26-year-old Samuel Silva of Newark, attempted to flee.

"Someone chased after him and they called the cops," witness Donte Williams said.

The driver was captured a couple of blocks away, arrested, and is now facing charges including manslaughter and driving while impaired.
