LISTEN: Francesa Says Cespedes 'Rescued The Mets From Their Deathbed'

NEW YORK (WFAN) -- Things are looking up for the Mets, and Yoenis Cespedes deserves a lot of the credit, WFAN's Mike Francesa said Wednesday.

The Mets, who had been sliding in the standings in recent weeks, enter Wednesday's game at St. Louis on a three-game winning streak and still within reach of the playoffs.

"Cespedes rescued the Mets from their deathbed in San Francisco," Francesa said during his show. "He really did. To me, they were that close. They were within games of being dead in my mind."

But Cespedes has had some help, namely from Jose Reyes, who is batting .339 since July 22.

"They're getting a tremendous lift from Reyes now," Cespedes said. "Reyes is doing what you thought Reyes could come here and do. He has given them a very big lift at the top of the lineup.

If Curtis Granderson and Jay Bruce can just snap out of their funks, New York "could have a decent run it," Francesa said.

But Francesa said a big concern is whether the Mets have good enough starting pitching to win the games needed to earn a wild-card spot. He said the Mets need to find a veteran starting pitcher to help give them a lift.

The Mets are 63-62 and trail the Cardinals by 3½ games for the second wild-card spot.
