Slick Roads, Some School Delays As Wintry Weather Hits Tri-State Area

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Wintry weather hit the Tri-State area overnight, bringing snow, rain or a mix of both and causing some slick roads and schools delays Monday morning.

The wintry mix is expected to eventually change to rain, but well north and northwest of the city, slick conditions are possible where one to three inches of snow and ice were forecast.

In New Jersey, the National Weather Service says a winter weather advisory is in effect until 9 a.m. Forecasters say two to four inches of snow are possible before the precipitation turns over to rain.

In Connecticut, the National Weather Service says two to four inches of snow could accumulate Monday, along with some ice. The northwest corner of the state in Litchfield County is expected to get the worst of it, with three to six inches expected.

Heavier snow is expected to continue and gradually change to rain, with the possibility of freezing rain along the way.

The snow meant salt truck drivers in Yonkers were ready as well as the Bronx, where the city's 689 salt and sand trucks hit the street for the first time this season.

"Ready, ready, ready," one salt truck driver said.

In western New York, the work load was ten-fold for tow truck drivers. Chautauqua County has seen 30 inches falling since Thursday.

"My guys have been running over 22 hours straight," said tow truck owner Jeff Butera. "I got to give them a lot of credit for staying in it."

In other parts of the country, icy conditions caused a plane to slide off the runway after landing at Detroit Metro Airport during the storm. In Illinois, transportation officials begged drivers to stay home.

But Chicago, which had expected a foot of snow, was spared.

Back home, many New Yorkers embraced the light and pretty snow locally.

"It makes the time special," one woman said. "You feel joy in New York."

"It's winter," another man said. "It's supposed to snow."

But others have already had enough of the salting, slippery roads, and bulky clothing.

"Snow and other cold weather forces me to wear the many layers that I'm wearing now," said Ali El Amir.

While the frosty flakes brought cheer and boosted business for a Christmas tree vendor at 157th and Broadway, the coating on cars and roadways enough to make you cautious.

"As long as there's no black ice, it's good," one driver said. "Most of us got all wheel drive anyway, so should be alright."

The wintry weather also brought some school delays across the Tri-State area.

Scores of school delays were reported early Monday and Holland Patent, Utica, Hamilton, New Hartford, Remsen, Richfield Springs, and Westmoreland were among schools that took a snow day and closed.

In eastern New York, a winter weather advisory was in effect until noon Monday. Total snow accumulation of three to five inches was expected, but temperatures were predicted to reach into the 40s by afternoon.

Parts of upstate New York can expect another 15 feet of snow before the winter is through.
