Going To The Gym: Your Workout Accessories Can Keep You Healthy

NEW YORK (WLNY) — When it comes to going to the gym, most everyone has a different routine.  Shape magazine's Editor-at-large, Bahar Takhtehchian, stopped by The Couch to share some universal tips, tricks and tools to improve the workout experience.

The first trick is to have a bag that will not weigh anyone down.

"We are taking so many things to the gym with us," said Takhtehchian.  "Heavy shoes, towels, beauty items, so you want to make sure that you find a gym bag that has a cross-body strap.  That way you are taking the strain off of your shoulders and that is going to promote healthy posture and healthy back safety."

Physical items are not the only thing to pay attention to when going to the gym.  The smell of the gym bag can also be an issue.  Takhtehchian suggested The Mini Moso Natural Air Purifying Bag that uses bamboo charcoal to absorb odors, stopping mold and mildew from forming in a gym tote.

"It's an all-natural way to kind of get rid of impurities and smell and even moisture," she said.

Hydration is also an important health concern.

"Instead of buying plastic bottles that are not good for the environment and not good on your wallet, this is a great way for you to get that fresh water that you should be drinking at the gym," said Takhtehchian.  "Every 15 minutes or so take a sip of water, make sure you're staying hydrated."

Finally, Takhtehchian suggested that gym-goers drape a white towel over the equipment, or use it to sop up perspiration, and bleach it at home to effectively kill germs.
